Define the purpose of each view
Establish what each camera should help verify: entry onto a driveway, movement along the boundary or an event near a doorway. Identifying facial or number-plate details needs a specific assessment and cannot be inferred from resolution alone.
At a villa, a test might follow the route from the gate to the front door. A site plan helps identify crossing points, obstructions and areas needing closer attention.
Observe lighting, movement and reflections
Arrange the test with the property’s normal lighting. A moving person, an arriving vehicle or a light switching on can produce different results from an empty scene.
The technician checks position, optical condition and settings. Nearby walls, reflective surfaces, dirt and water droplets can affect night images. Any adjustment should be checked again in the same scenario.
Check recordings as well as live images
After the agreed movements, find the recording and confirm that it provides enough information to understand the event. An organised check includes:
- Consistent time settings on cameras and recorder.
- The necessary footage before and after the event.
- No storage errors reported by the system.
- Exporting a short test clip and opening it on an agreed device.
Where recording is event-triggered, check that the movement is detected under the agreed conditions too.
Document results and limitations
Tests should use authorised participants and areas relevant to the assessment. Record views, lighting conditions, issues and proposed work so results can be compared after maintenance.
Access to footage, export permissions and retention periods should reflect the property’s purposes and applicable requirements. Recording capacity needs to support those decisions.
