Short definitions of the terms you find in our quotes and service pages.
- Failover
- Automatic switch to a second line (4G/5G, Starlink, fibre) when the main one drops. With a multi-WAN router it takes a few seconds, with no reboot. Connection continuity
- Bonding (SpeedFusion)
- Combining several connections into one tunnel: bandwidth adds up and, if one line degrades, traffic continues on the others without interruption. SpeedFusion is the Peplink technology that does it. Connection continuity
- Multi-WAN router
- A router with several ports or modems to connect fibre, 4G/5G SIMs and Starlink at the same time, with priority rules for the traffic that matters (POS, video calls, cameras). Connection continuity
- Starlink
- Low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite internet: high speed and latency of a few tens of milliseconds, no phone line. It needs a clear view of the sky from the mounting point. Starlink installation
- FWA
- Fixed Wireless Access: a fixed connection through a radio antenna pointed at the operator's mast. An alternative where fibre is missing, sensitive to distance and obstacles.
- FTTH fibre
- Optical fibre up to the home. Where available it is the most stable line; in many parts of Gallura it is not, and Starlink or 4G/5G are used instead.
- 4G/5G router
- A router with a data SIM, used as main or backup line. Performance depends on coverage at the exact spot: we measure it during the survey.
- Access point
- The device that broadcasts Wi-Fi in an area. A granite villa needs several, cabled, rather than a single router or repeaters. LAN & Wi-Fi networks
- Mesh and repeaters
- Systems that extend Wi-Fi over the air. Convenient, but they halve bandwidth at every hop: where possible we prefer cabled access points. LAN & Wi-Fi networks
- PoE
- Power over Ethernet: access points and cameras powered through the network cable, with no power socket nearby.
- VLAN
- Separate networks on the same cabling: guests, staff, cameras and home automation cannot see each other. The basis of security in hotels and villas. Hospitality solution
- Captive portal
- The welcome page of the guest Wi-Fi, with the property's brand, terms acceptance and bandwidth or time limits. Hospitality solution
- NVR
- Network Video Recorder: the recorder for IP cameras, with local storage and access from your phone. IP surveillance system
- PTZ camera
- A motorised camera (pan, tilt, zoom) that turns and zooms remotely: useful for large areas, marinas and vessels. IP surveillance system
- Intrusion alarm
- Sensors (doors, windows, motion) connected to a hub that alerts your phone and triggers the siren. Different from video surveillance, which records images. Intrusion alarm
- Latency
- Round-trip time of data, in milliseconds. It matters more than speed for video calls and home automation: Starlink stays under 100 ms, traditional satellites exceed 600.
- Remote monitoring
- Continuous check of routers, access points, cameras and lines: the alert reaches us before the problem is noticed, often fixed without an on-site visit. Monitoring and maintenance
