- Failover
- Automatic switching to a backup connection when the primary line is unavailable. Timing and effects on calls and payments depend on the router, rules and applications. Connection continuity
- Bonding (SpeedFusion)
- Using several connections together through a network tunnel. SpeedFusion is Peplink’s technology; available features depend on equipment, licences and configuration. Connection continuity
- Multi-WAN router
- A router with several ports or modems to connect fibre, 4G/5G SIMs and Starlink at the same time, with priority rules for the traffic that matters (POS, video calls, cameras). Connection continuity
- Starlink
- Internet access through low-Earth-orbit satellites. It needs a suitable view of the sky; performance and features depend on coverage, plan and operating conditions. Starlink installation
- FWA
- Fixed Wireless Access: a fixed connection through a radio antenna pointed at the operator's mast. An alternative where fibre is missing, sensitive to distance and obstacles.
- FTTH fibre
- Fibre to the building or home. Availability and service performance need to be checked at the property’s address.
- 4G/5G router
- A router with a data SIM, used as main or backup line. Performance depends on coverage at the exact spot: we measure it during the survey.
- Access point
- The device that broadcasts Wi-Fi in an area. A granite villa needs several, cabled, rather than a single router or repeaters. LAN and Wi-Fi networks
- Mesh and repeaters
- Systems that extend Wi-Fi using several connected devices, sometimes linked wirelessly. Performance depends on obstacles, links and traffic; we use wired links where practical. LAN and Wi-Fi networks
- PoE
- Power over Ethernet: access points and cameras powered through the network cable, with no power socket nearby.
- VLAN
- Logical separation of networks on shared cabling. Protecting guests, staff and devices also requires rules that control communication between them. Wi-Fi for hotels and B&Bs
- Captive portal
- The welcome page of the guest Wi-Fi, with the property's brand, terms acceptance and bandwidth or time limits. Wi-Fi for hotels and B&Bs
- NVR
- Network Video Recorder: the recorder for IP cameras, with local storage and access from your phone. IP video surveillance
- PTZ camera
- A motorised camera (pan, tilt, zoom) that turns and zooms remotely: useful for large areas, marinas and vessels. IP video surveillance
- Intrusion alarm
- Sensors (doors, windows, motion) connected to a hub that alerts your phone and triggers the siren. Different from video surveillance, which records images. Intrusion alarms
- Latency
- The time data takes to reach its destination and return, measured in milliseconds. It affects application responsiveness alongside connection stability and packet loss.
- Remote monitoring
- Checks on the status of equipment and connections, with alerts for detected issues. The agreed plan defines the devices covered, checks and support arrangements. Monitoring and maintenance
