A courier is at the gate while you are away. Would explaining where to leave a parcel be enough, without letting anyone inside? Or is an expected technician arriving, and you want to speak before authorising entry? These are illustrative situations where a video intercom connected to your phone can help. Its primary job is to connect you with the caller; opening the entrance is a separate decision.
Answering does not mean opening
A compatible solution can bring audio and video calls from the entrance station to a phone. For example, the official My2N app documentation describes intercom calls and door-opening commands. This is an example of functionality in a particular system, not a promise that any existing intercom can do the same.
The intended process is straightforward: someone rings, a responsible person answers, listens and decides what to do. They might give directions, ask the caller to wait, arrange another time or open the authorised entrance. Automatic opening is not necessary to obtain the benefit of a remote conversation.
Start with the installation, not the phone
A survey should check the entrance station, wiring, power and available connectivity. Any command to a gate or electric strike must suit the existing equipment. In a shared building, establish which parts belong to the communal installation and which changes are authorised. A personal app does not make the whole installation privately controlled.
Also decide what should happen inside the house or at reception. You may want an indoor monitor to keep ringing, several people to answer, or a different contact at certain times. These options depend on equipment, configuration and services. They should be specified in the proposal alongside any subscription requirements.
Check connectivity at both ends
Remote calling needs a working path from the intercom to the phone. The My2N specifications require connectivity at both ends and warn that slow connections can affect service or video quality. Good living-room Wi-Fi does not establish that the entrance station is properly connected, or that your phone has a usable data connection wherever you are.
If connectivity is lost, have an operational alternative: someone available locally, an agreed appointment or a local method supported by the installation. Any backup connection needs testing with the complete system. The presence of a second SIM alone does not justify a promise of uninterrupted calling.
Test notifications and an actual conversation
A demonstration with the app open does not cover everyday use. The My2N manual highlights notification permissions and phone settings that can affect incoming calls. Test the phones people will actually use, following the manufacturer's instructions for the relevant app and operating-system version.
- Ring while the phone is locked and the app is not in the foreground.
- Repeat over Wi-Fi and mobile data, including checks of silent and focus modes.
- Test audio in both directions with the noise normally present at the gate.
- Check the picture in sunshine, shade and evening lighting, without confusing picture quality with legally identifying accommodation guests.
- If several contacts are configured, check who receives the call and what happens when nobody answers.
- If opening is enabled, label the entrance clearly and verify that it closes as intended.
A simple delivery procedure
Agree on an appropriate delivery point and the instructions to give. Do not assume a courier can leave every shipment or enter any area: the delivery service's conditions and the courier's decision still matter. Where a delivery requires a signature or someone physically present, a video intercom does not automatically make remote handling possible.
Avoid giving every visitor a general entry code. Where temporary entry is needed, define the recipient, validity period and entrance if the system supports those controls. Our guide to temporary access for guests and staff helps distinguish a one-off conversation from permission that remains active afterwards.
Control images and accounts
If the system records or retains images, assess the purpose, field of view, access and retention period. The Italian Data Protection Authority's video-surveillance FAQ explains data minimisation and requirements for different settings. Default app settings do not replace that assessment.
For an IP video intercom project, prepare photographs of the current installation and identify who needs to answer. If you also want to operate a gate or door, include remote opening as a function to specify and test separately.
