Why now and not in June
A hotel's network problems show up when the property is full: a hundred guests streaming, the restaurant POS on Saturday night, digital check-in with a queue at reception. Off-season there is time to fix everything without stopping anyone. Here are the ten checks we run with the properties we look after.
1. Wi-Fi coverage in every room
"It works everywhere" is not enough: it must be measured room by room, including those at the end of the corridor and the common areas. Stone walls and basement floors are the usual suspects.
2. Guest Wi-Fi portal with your brand
The access portal is the first digital contact with the guest. Logo, colours, language, optional room code, session duration: all configurable. On the Hospitality page you can try one.
3. Separate networks (VLANs)
Guests, operations, POS, cameras: four different networks on the same installation. Guests must never see internal systems, and operations bandwidth must be guaranteed even at full occupancy.
4. Line backup
What happens if fibre drops during service? With a Peplink router traffic moves automatically to 4G/5G or Starlink in milliseconds. If you have no backup, this is the most important check on the list.
5. Priority for the traffic that matters
POS, management software and telephony must take precedence over guest streaming. Configured once, it holds for the whole season.
6. Cameras and retention
Common areas, car parks, storage, tills: check that they record, that retention periods are as required and that signage is in order.
7. Staff devices
Order handhelds, reception tablets, printers: updates done, correct access, spare batteries.
8. Updates and configuration backups
Router, switch and access point firmware updated out of hours; configurations saved, so a hardware failure is solved by swapping the unit and reloading the configuration.
9. Monitoring
Who notices that an access point went down at 2 a.m.? With remote monitoring we see it and often fix it before guests notice.
10. A number to call
In season you need a technical contact with priority support, not a ticket answered in three days. Define it before, not during.
Want to run these checks together? An off-season survey is the cheapest way to reach July with peace of mind.
